New Feature: Fig’s Weekly Bed Beard

If you didn't know already, The Hub and I have another awesome member of our little family:  our dog, Figaro.

One of my favorite stories to tell is about how Fig and The Hub became acquainted.  But to tell you that story, I have to first tell you how the The Hub and I met. Back in the spring of 2005, I decided that I had finally had enough of living in Boston.  I was ready for a change and got the opportunity to move to the West Coast through a promotion at work.  I had never been to the West Coast except for a 4 day trip to L.A. the year prior, but I was excited about the prospect of moving to San Francisco.  The company I had worked for was opening up a new office on the Embarcadero and I was going to help launch it.  While the office was still being built in SF, I lived and worked out of the Los Angeles office.  I had a nice set up living in the Residence Inn in Beverly Hills for a few months while I commuted up to San Francisco each week to meet with clients. On my very first trip ever up to San Francisco, I was scheduled to meet with an existing client:  a man that was very well known throughout my company.  He had run a marketing program earlier that year with my predecessor which enabled him to be taken to the Super Bowl, an outing that my company puts together for clients each year.  Everyone had a fun time at the event and The Client gained a great reputation at my company.  He had brought his father as his guest to the Super Bowl, which everyone thought was adorable.  I told one of my co-workers that I was going to be meeting with The Client on my trip and she said, “Oh!  He’s cute.  He’s about your age.”  Well this certainly added a level of interest to my trip, but I was fresh to the West Coast and not really thinking about prospective suitors.  I just wanted to make a good impression in the hopes that maybe The Client would repeat the program and I would get to go to the Super Bowl next year too. The day of the meeting arrived and I had a hectic morning.  I ended up not being able to blow dry my hair and wore an old suit that I hated.  I was a little annoyed since I knew I was going to be meeting with this potentially cute client, but I had a lot of other things on my mind and brushed off the fact that I was not looking my best.  Little did I know that The Client had been having a horrible day and was planning to blow off the meeting.  My predecessor had set up the appointment for the 3 of us as a transition meeting and he managed to convince The Client to keep the commitment.  The stipulation was that we had to have the meeting in a bar where we could have some beers.  “Is this new girl cool?” The Client asked.  Little did he know just how cool I this girl would turn out to be… We met at a bar and the first thing I thought to myself when he walked in was, “Oh he is cute…but he’s kind of short.”  The 3 of us discussed business for a bit and eventually another one of our co-workers came to join us.  My two co-workers began talking shop which left the opportunity open for me and The Client to get to know each other better.  Our conversation was easy and almost immediately turned to music.  We were both huge fans of live music and of a few bands in particular.  We discovered we had a lot in common and when I mentioned that I was moving to the city in a few months The Client suggested that we get together for a concert once I was settled. Not long after that, I made my big move up to San Francisco.  A week after I moved, Figaro arrived.  I was overjoyed!  And really overwhelmed.  Although I had known it would be work, taking care of a new puppy was a lot more work than I had expected.  That first week that I had Fig, The Client and I decided to have another meeting at another bar.  We met up for drinks at Zeitgeist and had a wonderful time, barely talking about work.  I realized how much I actually liked hanging out with this guy - he was really cool!  He asked if I would like to go grab some dinner, and I explained that I had just gotten a new puppy and I really could not leave him alone for very much longer.  He made a bit of a face, which I assumed was disappointment, and we decided to go and see a concert together the following week. The next week, The Client and I went to go see Stephen Malkmus at the Fillmore.  We met up at my apartment since it was within walking distance of the venue and The Client came inside to meet Fig.  Fig was almost 10 weeks old and just the most adorable little, fuzzy puppy you've ever seen.  How could you not love him?!  The Client sort of awkwardly tried to pet him as Fig raced around the room wanting to play with his new friend.  After a few minutes, we decided to head out to the show.  I set up Fig in the crate and off we went.

About a month later, after several more concerts and a few dinners, The Client eventually became The Boyfriend.  I started meeting his large network of friends in San Francisco becoming a part of their larger group. In August, a group of us decided to head out to Lake Tahoe for the weekend.  We had a great time!  Many of The Boyfriend's friends had dogs and Fig had so much fun playing with everyone, hiking and running around.  Towards the end of the weekend, I was sitting around with the other girls as we watched The Boyfriend playing with Fig.  "Wow," one of the girls said, "we can't believe how good he is with Figaro!"  I just couldn't stop smiling, I was having such a great time with my new boyfriend and all of his friends up in Tahoe.  "I know!" I said, "Isn't it so cute?"  The girls exchanged some glances and gave me quizzical expressions.  "Well, you know that he hates dogs, right?"  My face fell, I was crushed!  How could my new, awesome, handsome, funny and smart boyfriend hate dogs???  I loved dogs and planned to have them around for the rest of my life. After the weekend was over, I broached the subject with The Boyfriend, "So, the girls tell me you do not actually like dogs..."  The Boyfriend explained that he had never grown up with a pet and he didn't understand why someone would want to add the responsibility to their lives.  "Why would you want to have a dog?"  he said, "I just don't get it."  He admitted that he thought Fig was adorable and, since Fig was a little dog, he didn't mind having him around as much.  I explained to him the bond you form with an animal once it is your pet.  I told him about how much you can grow to truly love a dog and feel like it is a member of your family.

After 4 more years, The Boyfriend became The Hub.  And now The Hub is the first to admit that he is a full convert.  He loves Figaro.  He loves to play with him and cuddle him, he lets Fig lick his face and he even lets Fig sleep in bed with us.  For pete's sake, Figaro was the ring bearer in our wedding!  I knew it was for real when we were away on a trip a few years ago, getting into bed at our hotel and The Hub said, "it feels weird to be getting into bed without Fig."  It was official:  The Hub loves dogs.  Little dogs.

This is all a very long winded way of me telling you (if you are still reading) about a new weekly post:  Fig's Bed Beard.  This is a name I came up with after constantly laughing over the way Fig's beard looks after he takes a long nap.  It's knotted, it's matted and it's sticking out in all kinds of crazy directions.  In short, it's Bed Beard.  The Hub and I love to poke fun at Fig's Bed Beard and we're always calling each other over to check it out.  I have finally captured enough instances of this Bed Beard in photos to make this a weekly post, so each Friday I'll post a new picture of Fig's Bed Beard. Behold, week 1's photo:

Anytime I need a good laugh, I just look at one of these pictures.  Isn't he hilarious?!  Hope this put a smile on your Friday! By the way, The Hub never bought a single program from me and he never went to the Super Bowl again. Have a good weekend everyone!
