Holiday Host Gift Guide

As you know by now, I firmly believe in the etiquette of bringing a little something for your host or hostess when you arrive to a party.  With the holidays in full swing, it's fun to go above and beyond the typical gifts like a bottle of wine or bouquet of flowers. Earlier this week I shared my idea of preparing a pretty mason jar full of Spicy and Sweet Glazed Nuts.  Here are a few other gift ideas I've come across that I think would be perfect this time of year.

1.  Big Dipper Wax Works - Beeswax Candles

As Patty Preachy taught us over Thanksgiving, beeswax candles are all natural, smell great and are way better for the environment.  I discovered these beautiful candles in my local Global Exchange and read up on the company.  Big Dipper Wax Works, based in Seattle, is a wonderful organization with a strong commitment to their community and the environment.  They donate 10% of their net sales to organizations focused on beekeeping outreach, education, and sustainability efforts.  You can purchase these candles online or in regional stores.

2.  Saipua Soaps

My friends Pete + Esme told me about these beautiful olive oil based soaps.  They are so pretty you almost don't want to unwrap them!  These soaps are made in small batches in their family-owned, Brooklyn workshop, but you can buy them online.  My scent choices are Lavender Oatmeal, Basil and Rose Geranium.

3.  Williams-Sonoma Peppermint Hot Chocolate

This is a an old stand-by for me.  If I'm caught up in the holiday rush and don't have time to make anything for my hosts, I hop into Williams-Sonoma and grab a tin of this delicious hot chocolate.  The food items at WS are usually fantastic and this is no exception.  If you want to give a little more, pick out 2 glass mugs and put it all in a pretty gift bag.

4.  Prepara Herb-Savor

I have been wanting an Herb-Savor ever since it was featured as one of Oprah's Ultimate Favorite Things a few weeks ago.  Often times I end up buying a whole package of herbs for recipe which calls for only 1 or 2 tablespoons.  I try not to let the rest go to waste, but it's hard to keep them fresh.  This handy gadget fits in the refrigerator and will keep your herbs fresh for up to 3 weeks.  It also works on asparagus - bonus!

5.  Recipes in a Jar

This gift requires a little bit more work, but I found this idea so adorable that I had to include it.  This Food Network page gives you the ingredients to include in your jar for 5 different recipes.  It's is a perfect gift to give someone who likes to cook.  My favorites are the Curried Lentil Soup and the Super Chunky Christmas Cookies.  Don't forget to include a copy of the recipe!
