adventures of an american housewife in the south of france

Food Porn Dictionary

Even though we won't start our French classes until later this week, The Hub and I are having fun continuing our podcasts lessons and learning from new friends.  In addition to learning the French equivalent of the phrase, "that's what she said" (which when literally translated is much dirtier than anything Michael Scott would ever say intentionally), we've pretty much figured out everything we need to know to successfully dine at a restaurant.  We can ask for a table for two inside or outside.  We can order our food and wine.  We can say we're too full for dessert or order dessert and cafe.  We can ask for the bill.  Unfortunately whenever the waiter says something back to us, we still get the deer in headlights look on our faces...but we're getting there. I've had lots of requests for more food pictures, so I thought I'd finally treat you to some good ones since I'm starting to build quite a collection.  We'll start small with a little Salade Poulet et un verre du vin Rosé (Salad with Chicken and a glass of Rosé)

Antigone - 5.5.11

Next, a little lunch at Le Spot in Beaux Arts neighborhood of Montpellier:  Porc au Sésame Brochettes et Gratin Dauphinois (Sesame Pork Skewers with Scalloped Potatoes)

Le Spot - 5.2.11

Followed by some dinner at La Girafe where The Hub and I split Poitrine de Canard Rotie, Riz Gratiné à l'estragon (Roasted Duck Breast with Tarragon Risotto)

La Girafe - 5.2.11

and also Filet de Rascasse Roti, Marinée au Thym et Citron Vert (Roasted Filet of Fish Marinated in Thyme and Lime...plus some potatoes for good measure!)

La Girafe - 5.2.11

Oh ya, then we got dessert.  Profiteroles Crème Glacée Chocolat Blanc, Sauce Chocolat Noir, Crème Fouettée à la Vanille de Madagascar (Profiteroles with White Chocolate Ice Cream, Dark Chocolate Sauce, Whipped Cream with Madagascar Vanilla)

Heaven at La Girafe - 5.2.11

For our Engagiversary, we ate at La Place in the Saint Roch neighborhood of Montpellier.  I didn't write this one down and they don't have a specific menu, so this is only what I can remember.  I ordered Ballontines Viande avec Jambon et Mozzerella.  Ballontines translates into a Parcel of Meat, which is basically chicken spirals stuffed with mozzarella and ham.  They drizzled a delicious creamy sauce on top and served it with, what else, potatoes.

La Place - 5.4.11

The Hub ordered D'Agneau Rôti à Feu or Slow Roasted Lamb.  His dish was served with veggies and some buttered fingerling potatoes.

La Place - 5.4.11

We also got dessert, but we were too busy stuffing our face to snap a picture of it.  On Saturday morning we walked with our friends to an amazing Boulangerie Patissiere in Castries called Malis.  Look at some of the beautiful things they make:

That night, a new friend (from Fremont!) took us to Burger'N'Co.  Quite possibly the coolest rock & roll burger place in Europe where the slogan is "I know it's only Burger but I like it."  Close enough.  The Hub ordered the Come As You Are:  Steak, Bacon, Cheddar, Oignons, Sauce BBQ.  Which is basically exactly what it sounds like.  I ordered the Unforgiven:  Steak, Chèvre Miel, Oignons Frits, Salade, Tomate (Burger, Goat Cheese with Honey, Onion Rings, Lettuce, and Tomato)

Burgers'N'Co - 5.7.11

And yesterday I finished off the last of my treats from Malis.  A fluffy and delicious little Madeline, which I'm becoming quite fond of.  Maybe too fond.

It's hard to believe that our pants are actually getting looser, not tighter.  Thank god we are getting so much exercise. As much fun as we're having eating all of this delicious food and exploring all the fantastic restaurants, not having a kitchen is really starting to wear on me.  I'm so excited to get into our own home where I can start trying my hand at these dishes instead of just ordering them at restaurants.  It's only a matter of time now! À bientôt!
