adventures of an american housewife in the south of france

FAQ and French Bed Beard

Happy Friday everyone!  Thank you all so much for your kind words of support as we embark on this new step in our lives.  We've had lots of questions come up from friends and family in the last few weeks and we thought it would be fun to address them on the blog.  If there is anything else you want to know about our move, just ask! What does The Hub do? Besides being an awesome husband, he does marketing for a video game company and will be working in their Montpellier studio on Rayman Origins. What is Montpellier like? Montpellier is on the Mediterranean Sea in the south of France’s Languedoc region, just west of Provence.  It is a university town with about 250,000 people, 43% of which are under the age of 30! (source)  From what we hear it’s very beautiful, friendly, and laid back.  The climate is mild and quite similar to San Francisco, although the nights are a bit colder and the days hotter.  This will be the third time in my life that I have moved to a city sight unseen (The Hub has been there once, briefly) and I am really excited to check it out. Do you and The Hub speak French? Nope!  Not at all.  But we are excited to learn!  The Hub’s company has bought us all levels of Rosetta Stone and we’ll be taking classes when we arrive. How long will you be there? The work contract is an 18 month assignment. We’ll see what happens after that… So The Hub will be working, what will you be doing? Blogging and cooking of course!  Learning French, being a Haute Housewife, and traveling.  I do not have a company to sponsor a work visa for me, but I am open to seeing if there are other employment or volunteer opportunities available once we move. Is Fig coming with you?  Will he have to be quarantined? Of course Fig is coming with us!  He is our child and we would not dream of doing this without him.  Luckily there is no quarantine for bringing a dog from the US to France.  He just needs to prove that his rabies vaccinations are up to date and that he is microchipped. Where will you live? We’re not entirely sure yet.  For the first month, we’ll be living in a hotel and working with a real estate agent to find a home.  We’d like to have some space, so not necessarily in the center of the city, but still be on the train line. What is the cost of living like? Like most places in the world, the cost of living is less than San Francisco and that’s all we need to know for now! What are you doing with all your stuff? We are in the process of going through a huge purge and will be having a garage sale before we leave.  We’ll be taking a small amount of things to France with us and putting the rest in storage.  We’ll (hopefully) be renting a furnished home. When are you leaving? Our plan right now is to leave San Francisco on April 14th and head back to the Midwest to leave my car and a few things with my parents.  We’ll be flying to France on April 22nd, only five short weeks from today! How are you feeling about the move? We have wanted this for so long, it’s almost surreal that it’s finally happening!  We are so excited and at the same time overwhelmed with all we have to do before we move:  clean out our apartment, sell The Hub’s car, cancel subscriptions, book a storage space, get new cell phones and bank accounts, etc. etc.  We’ve not even begun to wrap our heads around the emotions of leaving our beloved San Francisco.  We just can’t go there yet. Is Fig excited to move to France? Of course he is!  Just look at this French Bed Beard:

le woof!

Have a great weekend, friends!
